- What's new? Look for the *new!* as you read.
-
- GadgetHack lets you control your Palm handheld within the current
- application. You can make the backlight "sticky," invert the screen for
- easy reading, jump back and forth between utility apps, and keep instant
- track of the time, date and voltage.
-
- GadgetHack uses the title of your application to set up "modes" that you
- can use to get information from your Palm device.
-
- *new!*
- GadgetHack 1.06 makes the following change:
- * The voltage displays correctly for Palm V's LiOn batteries.
-
- This is version 1.06 of GadgetHack. Please email any questions or comments
- to mcdan@csi.com and include "GadgetHack" in the subject. Visit the web

- | INSTALLING GADGETHACK |
- '-----------------------'
- To install GadgetHack you need HackMaster. This is the Hack manager written
- by Edward Keyes, available at http://www.daggerware.com/hackmstr.htm (or by
- searching any of the PalmPilot archives). Once you've installed HackMaster,
- install GadgetHack like you would any other application. See below for the
- configuration options.
-
- As with any hack, you should always be careful when installing it. It's a
- good idea to backup any important information you have stored on your Palm
- handheld.
-
-
- .------------------------.
- | CONFIGURING GADGETHACK |
- '------------------------'
- The Configure GadgetHack screen has a few basic functions. The first is
- setting up which modes you want to use. You may select all the modes, but
- keep in mind that to get from one mode to the next you have to tap on the
- title. So if you select the date mode, you may not need the weekday mode
- as well.
-
- A brief description of the modes is as follows:
- . Time Mode: displays the current time (e.g., 3:50 pm)
- . Date Mode: displays the current date (e.g., 1/22/99)
- . Weekday Mode: displays the current weekday (e.g., Friday)
- . Voltage Mode: displays the current voltage
- . Gadgets Mode: displays a bar of gadgets (more on this below)
-
- The next main area is the gadgets bar. In the bar is a row of 9 gadgets you
- can pick from. You may pick anywhere between 1 and all 9 gadgets.
- . Off: turn off the device
- . Off & Lock: turn off and lock the device
- . Backlight: toggle the backlight
- . Invert: toggle inverting the screen
- . Graffiti: pop up Graffiti help
- . Memory: jump to the Memory application (Palm OS2.x)
- . Preferences: jump to the Preferences application
- . Security: jump to the Security application
- . HackMaster: jump to the HackMaster application
-
-

- | OTHER OPTIONS |
- '---------------'
- You may limit GadgetHack's width in the title area by choosing three
- limiting widths:
- . Prior Title: never wider than the original title
- . Sized: 1/3 screen or less
- . Smart: the tightest fit with items in the title area
-
- We recommend using Smart mode. There are some cases where Smart mode
- won't realize that there's text in the title area and draw over it, but
- these are rare. The safest mode is Prior Title because it will never be
- larger than the original title, but it may needlessly limit you in some
- cases.
-
- Disallow title taps in current app: Some apps, like Date Book, try to do
- stuff like show you the time when you tap on the title. This option will
- ensure that GadgetHack doesn't conflict with situations like this. This
- option is highly recommended.
-
- Return to title after 2 seconds: You may switch to any mode, but GadgetHack
- will return to the original title after 2 seconds.
-
- Replace MenuHack functionality: If you formerly used MenuHack it will not
- work with GadgetHack. To drop down a menu in GadgetHack make sure that this
- option is checked. Then, in the application, tap on the menu and drag down
- to display the menu.

- | NOTES |
- '-------'
- There are some behind-the-scenes features and notes for GadgetHack that are
- as follows:
- 1. If the Backlight gadget is enabled and you turn off the device with the
- backlight on, when you turn it on again the backlight will turn on again
- as well.
- 2. If you use one of the "jump" gadgets but don't immediately return from
- the utility, then get to the gadgets mode again and jump to another
- utility, when you tap the return gadget you will return to the original
- app, not the last utility.
- 3. You may notice at times that GadgetHack truncates the title prematurely
- but it seems like there's a lot more space in the title area. This
- means that the program you're using has a hidden control in the title
- area. Since GadgetHack doesn't know if the program will make the control
- visible later it can't overstep that boundary.
- 4. If a title is too small and the width mode is set to Prior Title then
- GadgetHack will not enable. An example of this is the Zip application.
- 5. You must always have at least one mode and at least one gadget selected.
